This yarn does have a beautiful drape, but it feels SO SCRATCHY knitted up, ESPECIALLY on the purl side.
It's like wearing a dang brillo pad. UGH.
I made a tank top out of it, then ripped it all out when i just couldn't bear how it feels. I made a pair of socks out of it cos I couldn't bear to throw away the expensive yarn. I thought that if it wasn't covering a large part of my body and just my feet it would be ok. It wasn't. I felt terrible. I threw all that expensive yarn away.

Wow - I was just looking at that yarn yesterday (on-line). Sorry to hear you didn't like it.
Did you give it a good soak and block?

Now I finished up a spring sweater with it and wore it all day on Easter and then again to work on Wednesday and didn't find it rough. It has a decidedly different texture, yes, but I found it comfortable.
I think folks have different levels of sensitivity to certain fibers.
Cheers

I just finished a top with this yarn and haven't worn it yet but think it'll be okay. I was disappointed in the way the yarn split as I knit with it, though. I have a lot of snags to fix before wearing.

Did you try washing it? It softens a bit when washed. The new and improved bamboo from SWTC is softer because they make it from the inner pulp of the bamboo stalk.

Could also be a matter of fabric density...might be more comfortable at a slightly looser gauge.

Is it the older bamboo (with the brown paper label?) They changed the bamboo not too long ago (a glossier, more colorful label), now it is really soft and nice. The older stuff, not so much.

| I made a lace washcloth out of the original with the brown label. It is really harsh, good for exfoliation, LOL! I don't think that would have made a good sweater yarn, and it would be really expensive. I am going to pick up some of the newer version though, bamboo is still intriguing. |

The new SWTC bamboo is much softer (newer label), I found the old version to be very scratchy but the new stuff is nice.
Also, Cascade has now come out with the 100% bamboo which is machine washable and its super soft.

Naturally Yarns also has a new 100% bamboo yarn, called Stella, that is really soft and also machine washable. There is a rectangular shawl pattern in the latest Knit Simple that uses the Lilac Stella.

| Yeah it had the brown label. I was at my LYS lately and I did feel some really soft bamboo by some other company!! I'll have to check out SWTC's new bamboo. I'm all into plant fibers, especially renewable ones. :) |

The problem I had with the new bamboo wasn't one of softness--it's incredibly soft and is great for socks--but one of gauge. I made the ballerina top--swatched and even used smaller needles than required because I didn't want the fabric too loose.
It took forever to knit, and I had to frog the whole effing thing. It was huge, just HUGE. |

Leslie41 I'm in the process of knitting up the Lotus Blossom Tank (IK Summer'06)and I also have been having a problem with gauge. I had to rip part of it out, go to smaller needles also, and I'm not really liking the way it's coming out now. This is taking forever to knit, too.
I get the feeling I'll be frogging it too. What a PITA!

| I'm working on a tank in RYC's Bamboo Soft. It really is soft, and knits up quickly. If I had to complain about something (and I usually do), it's a bit splitty. Otherwise, I love it. |

has anyone checked this yarn for fire safety? someone was telling me the other day that bamboo has a tendency to flare if exposed to fire (think candle nearby).
Keep knitting, this too shall pass. |
